Boomerang/Waste Free Lunch Program

As you may be aware, St. Augustine has for many years been striving to “Care for God’s Creation”, by becoming environmentally friendly.  Last year students and staff formed an ECO Team to try and became recognized as a Certified Silver
ECO School.

This year we are aiming to become a Certified Gold ECO School. To that end, we are looking to reduce our waste production by 80%.  Last year, St. Augustine school adopted a Boomerang Lunch policy on Wednesdays to help make a difference in our environment.  This year, as of October 19, 2015, the first day of Waste Reduction Week,  we will be moving to a total “Boomerang/Waste Free” Lunch Program.

This means that all waste, food or containers will be returned home for recycling.  Unfortunately, we do not have the facilities for proper rinsing of containers, and despite our best efforts to use the green bin program, we ended up with cross contamination, and our containers had to be put in the garbage.

We know this program will require families to rethink food preparation and student actions.  Our hope is that informative discussions will take place at home and school and habits will change.  Packing a waste free lunch not only helps the environment, it can also result in healthier, more nutritious snack/lunches as many prepackaged foods contain significant amounts of salt, preservatives, sugar and fat.  There is also a cost savings as lunches made of prepackaged items cost more than buying larger quantities and serving them in reusable containers.

Thanks in advance for your support with this very important initiative.
